Transformation

How is your day going thus far? It’s cloudy & humid here in nw Ohio & I am so over summer & so ready for fall. BUT…before autumn rushes through with fresh breezes, pumpkin spice coffees, & colorful leaves dropping,  I need to transform what previously was what I called my “space” into a family room/studio. So let me tell you about. . .

Blog Title My Home

As every home I’ve ever lived in…it rests on a corner & is painted a deep red with cream trim. It began as a gun shop, maybe in the 1930s, when tiny villages were vibrant places with businesses & even a small school. It belonged to a couple who I cared deeply for & they are the ones who transformed the space into a charming little house for 2. My daughter, grandson, & I moved in 7 years ago & now it’s Winston, Miss Adventure & me makes three.

The house is indeed small, but the couple were forward thinking adding pull-outs in the 1970s to double the cupboard space in the tiny kitchen. An entire wall in the living room is a bookcase with adjustable shelves.

A very simple rough layout of my home to give you an idea of the space that needs a transformation. . .

House layout

Taber Quote

It’s an L-shape with NINE windows inside deep sills that I absolutely love, love, love. So much natural light bathes the room & it is my favorite place in the house. I can sit at my computer & look out the window any time of year & see squirrels chasing each other across thick branches & birds arguing over daily events. Spring brings the most heavenly fragrance from a lilac growing against one of the windows. From these windows watching it snow becomes a soft & magical time.  This is so close to an ideal room except….how to blend a studio with a family room.

I didn’t do a very good job blending bedroom & studio but I’d like to do a better job with family room & studio.  Any ideas?

Room Collage

As you can see…I’m something of a plain jane with white woodwork & a beige sort of wall painted in Dried Hydrangea (BTW…this color is the color I am using throughout the house cuz I like it…ALOT!) I am so open to suggestions on how to make this room work. Oh & yes that is an old, beautiful sewing machine sitting in the back corner. I have loads of old things from glass apothecary jars to canning jars to pretty dishes. A Hoosier cabinet from the turn of the century sits against another wall. I did not take a photo of it because…well…it’s a mess. What do you think of storing craft supplies in the old cupboard? It could use some TLC. Pops of color are sorely needed, but I have a deep greenish/brown, super comfy little sofa that’s not going anywhere.

I need a crafting corner or spot where I can assemble printbles & take fantastic photos to use with listings & social media posts but still have room for entertaining on occasion. I’m thinking of holding classes here, too. There must be room for lots of paperie pieces, accessories for printables, props for photographing printables, & places to keep business & personal type stuff.

Am I asking too much of this L-shaped space? Please comment on your thoughts…I so need some input in how to transform this wonderful room.

Changes

Life is all about changes, isn’t it? Our bodies change, we go through phases, we transition. Life wouldn’t be much of a journey if we didn’t change.  For 13 years I’ve had the privilege & gift of being what I fondly call the nanny-granny to my wonderful grandson. Living with my daughter & this remarkable young man has brought a plethora of emotions & the reality that sometimes a mom & her daughter butt heads, don’t agree & always find a way back into the heart of each other. If someone asked me, “What do you do?” My first response, “I’m a mom & mimi (mimi = grandma).  Things are about to change in a big way!

I am proud of my daughter & son, both are type A personalities, go getters who get things done. As the nanny granny I took care of the little man while  his mama worked hard to carve out a career in marketing. The time has come when he doesn’t need a nanny granny anymore & his mom is taking a huge step in her life…they are moving & I will physically stay where I am.  With this change in my life comes an absolute….Studio on the Corner must become a thriving, successful business. It’s what I want, it’s what I need, it is my heart’s desire. No longer can I say I am mom & mimi, even though I am, no I must now declare myself a business owner & digital designer. When someone asks, What do you? The answer must be concise & on point:

Elevator speech copyIt’s not a perfect elevator speech & I want people to know that I put my customers first, always & forever. Studio on the Corner wants to make your life a bit easier & more lovely in small, perhaps not so important ways. However, if you’ve ever been pressed for time & need something like a gift tag now, it’s nice to know that within a few minutes you can purchase, download, print….stress level lowered.

So as I maneuver through this big change, momentous-for-me transition I hope you won’t mind that I use this platform as something of a sound board.  I gotta say, this will not be easy for a 60 something woman, but I’m willing to share this journey into the next phase of my life. Come join me ‘cuz sometimes I know I’ll need a shoulder to cry on, a bit of a confidence boost & someone to listen & who knows, it may help you too if you are facing a change in your life.

Yep, come June it’s gonna be just my little friend, Winston, the mini poodle, & me.  Oh & I can’t forget the aging grand dame, Miss Adventure.

The Studio on the Corner has been busy with a folder full of works in progress. Adorable papers extracted from a charming book all in soft green-blue color….think pale teal will be listed soon. The papers will eventually be joined by images to create wall prints for the home focusing on the rooms of children. There will be much more about the wall art later.

It’s a perfect bundle for moms & grandmas who love to create art&/or junk journals & smash books. Included in the kit are papers, tags, pockets, journal cards, & word art. All ready to be printed & cut to become part of an artful, old-time journal. Wondering how to give such a gift? How about placing all the folders & files on to a CD or DVD. Treasures

bonnetintrunk

Finding treasures in an old attic was a childhood dream of mine. Both of my grandmothers passed on before I had a chance to know them, so there were no long-kept clothes, hats, or playthings from the past stored in an old trunk in the dusty corner of an attic. Instead, I day dreamed about finding all sorts of wonderful well-loved, time-worn things: old diaries filled with heart secrets, keys that opened rooms with four poster beds & old portraits, big, floppy hats decorated with feathers & birds, old dresses that trailed behind, tiny shoes from an infant of a time gone by, dolls with big blue eyes & cloth bodies, & on it went. This dream began my love of all things old & time-worn.

My dad was quite handy with tools & carpentry type projects. He could fix things up & do what needed to be done. We had a bit of a plumbing project & he had to dig outside to find the problem & put it to rights. I stood outside along with a couple of my siblings watching him dig when he came across a dirty dark green bottle. He rubbed the dirt off with his rough hands & then asked if anyone wanted it. I spoke right up & he handed it to me. Scrubbed & shined, it looked like an emerald jewel in the shape of a hexagon. The little bottle sits on my window sill waiting to become a vase for small flowers or catching the rays in a sparkle of shine. Collecting old bottles became a childhood interest that continues to this day. Milk bottles, medicine bottles, canning jars with bales or zinc lids sit in cupboards, the pie safe, on window sills, & in use. Pens, pencils, old buttons, spools of thread & what have you are corralled within the confine of bottles & jars.  Seeing them every day gives me a sense of comfort & satisfaction.

Blog These Things I love copy

One day there was an auction across the street. An old trunk just like the one in the picture caught my eye. Oh how I wanted that trunk! My dad bid on it & the trunk became mine. It became my hope chest. It went where I did until a few years ago when it was tucked into a shed & became irreparable. More than one tear fell as the decision was made to let it go.  It was a treasure for so many reasons, but sometimes we have to make room for new ones.

While I have an affinity for history, vintage & downright old things there are new & wonderful treasures that steal our hearts.

Halloween Blog Image

Halloween is coming & with it all manner of ephemera fun to use in Halloween projects. This year’s theme is Shakespeare’s Macbeth! So be wary….for something wicked this way comes….

Hecate's Apothecary Etsy Image 1 copy

Hecate’s Apothecary tags will be listed in Studio on the Corner Etsy shop, soon. The tags are inspired by the 3 witches boiling up a spell for Macbeth that includes ingredients like: fillet of a fenny snake, wool of bat, slips of yew, poisoned entrails & so much more! The pantry of those three witches was filled to the brim!

That’s it for today. I’ll be off late next week to meet that new grandson. A week long visit that I’m so looking forward to. Until next time, have a wonderful end of summer!
