Transformation

How is your day going thus far? It’s cloudy & humid here in nw Ohio & I am so over summer & so ready for fall. BUT…before autumn rushes through with fresh breezes, pumpkin spice coffees, & colorful leaves dropping,  I need to transform what previously was what I called my “space” into a family room/studio. So let me tell you about. . .

Blog Title My Home

As every home I’ve ever lived in…it rests on a corner & is painted a deep red with cream trim. It began as a gun shop, maybe in the 1930s, when tiny villages were vibrant places with businesses & even a small school. It belonged to a couple who I cared deeply for & they are the ones who transformed the space into a charming little house for 2. My daughter, grandson, & I moved in 7 years ago & now it’s Winston, Miss Adventure & me makes three.

The house is indeed small, but the couple were forward thinking adding pull-outs in the 1970s to double the cupboard space in the tiny kitchen. An entire wall in the living room is a bookcase with adjustable shelves.

A very simple rough layout of my home to give you an idea of the space that needs a transformation. . .

House layout

Taber Quote

It’s an L-shape with NINE windows inside deep sills that I absolutely love, love, love. So much natural light bathes the room & it is my favorite place in the house. I can sit at my computer & look out the window any time of year & see squirrels chasing each other across thick branches & birds arguing over daily events. Spring brings the most heavenly fragrance from a lilac growing against one of the windows. From these windows watching it snow becomes a soft & magical time.  This is so close to an ideal room except….how to blend a studio with a family room.

I didn’t do a very good job blending bedroom & studio but I’d like to do a better job with family room & studio.  Any ideas?

Room Collage

As you can see…I’m something of a plain jane with white woodwork & a beige sort of wall painted in Dried Hydrangea (BTW…this color is the color I am using throughout the house cuz I like it…ALOT!) I am so open to suggestions on how to make this room work. Oh & yes that is an old, beautiful sewing machine sitting in the back corner. I have loads of old things from glass apothecary jars to canning jars to pretty dishes. A Hoosier cabinet from the turn of the century sits against another wall. I did not take a photo of it because…well…it’s a mess. What do you think of storing craft supplies in the old cupboard? It could use some TLC. Pops of color are sorely needed, but I have a deep greenish/brown, super comfy little sofa that’s not going anywhere.

I need a crafting corner or spot where I can assemble printbles & take fantastic photos to use with listings & social media posts but still have room for entertaining on occasion. I’m thinking of holding classes here, too. There must be room for lots of paperie pieces, accessories for printables, props for photographing printables, & places to keep business & personal type stuff.

Am I asking too much of this L-shaped space? Please comment on your thoughts…I so need some input in how to transform this wonderful room.

Studio on the Corner is into Halloween even though it’s hot & humid. A fun pack of papers, Fright Night, will soon be listed along with tags, & more papers & labels for creating apothecary packages for decorating your home in a haunted, Victorian way.

Here’s a peek at the dozen papers soon to be listed…

Fright Night Etsy Image 1

Always high-quality, 300 dpi, 8.5 inches x 11 inches so you can print at home, if you want.  Wondering what to do with digital papers?  Here’s a quick list:

  1. Use for digital scrapbooking
  2. Use for paper scrapbooking
  3. Add a background to a social media banner
  4. Create cupcake toppers &/or wrappers
  5. Use for card making
  6. Wrap a small gift
  7. Cover a light switch
  8. Make paper bows
  9. Use with your Cricut or whatever cut-out crafting machine you have
  10. Add a cover to metal tags
  11. Fold & add as a page in an art or junk journal
  12. Use your vibrant imagination!

Well there it is. . . what’s going on here on the corner.  I sure hope I hear from you ‘cuz I really need some input on that room.  Have a most wonderful August day!

Digital Crafting

UPDATE: The date for the return of the SotC Newsletter is incorrect. It will be November 8 not October 11.

A while back I received a message at Studio on the Corner Etsy shop inquiring about digital papers & what to do with them along with “What does digital mean?” Now that’s not the first time that question has been posed to me, but it has spurred me on to try to explain.

Digital Crafting Title copy

Before I get started, I know there are loads of people out there who know exactly what I’m talking about. In fact, there’s a whole generation or several now that would be shocked if they had to live without the digital world. It’s all they know,  but for those of us who grew up with party lines, land lines, & phones that would be considered gigantic by today’s standards, the digital world can be a bit baffling. So just what is all this artsy stuff on computers?

Digital Crafting Title 2

Digital can be simple or complex, but it’s always convenient. Example: You’re going to a birthday party & realize that you forgot to pick up a tag or card. If you have computer access & a printer in just a few moments you can….

Digital Crafting Title 3

London Cries Etsy Image 3

Your stress level just went down a notch. No stopping to pick up a tag or card, fumbling around for a pen & place to write while enroute to the party.  The other great thing about digital creations, you will find unique, artful, wonderful selections by the thousands!

What about wrapping paper? Well, yeah, there are places to find gorgeous wrapping papers, but they are physical items that would be commercially printed & sent to your home. Not quite as convenient, but oh the array of papers will boggle your mind. Take a look at what digital artists & others are doing on Spoonflower! My goal is to join Spoonflower soon & turn digital papers into fabrics, gift wraps, or even wallpaper.

How about a skeleton damask fabric for napkins & a crazy table cloth? Maybe down the road, but for now you can purchase Hecate’s Halloween Paper Pack in Studio on the Corner Etsy shop as a digital download.

Digital Crafting Title 4

Throwing a party?  Need decorations?  You can create a whole party with a theme through the world of digitals. Invitations, party banner, favors, goodie bags, cupcake wrappers, cupcake toppers, signs, labels & tags for food identification on a buffet table or tie around bottled beverages. Oh & don’t forget the tiny details like straw flags, candy wrappers with bag toppers, & water bottle labels.

Who needs Hallmark when you have digitals at the stroke of a key. You can download, print, & cut out cards or invitations for every occasion & some you never thought of.

Starting your own business? You’ll need business cards, brochures, signage, & maybe hang tags…all found as digitals that you can edit, add your own text or information, download, print & distribute.

Digitals for the home is a great way to add charm & uniquely you interiors. From recipe cards to beautiful posters & prints the digital world answers the call.

I haven’t even touched on digital scrapbooking, planners or journals. Let’s save that for another day. I hope you have a better idea of just what digitals are & how you can use them to your advantage. If you have any questions just comment, email or send a message via Etsy Conversations. I’ll gladly answer any questions you ask.

FAMILY, Studio on the Corner Etsy Shop

Welcome September

There is a change in the air. I notice it in August when quiet evenings resonate with the lack of robins singing their courtly songs. Then as August nears it’s closing curtain, the breezes carry an earthy scent that brings back memories of cooler days, turning leaves, & harvests of all kinds. September is here & I for one am glad of it.

September _edited-1

Subway September

Just a few reasons why autumn is my favorite time of year!

Boys

I am blessed…I have three wonderful men in my life: a son & 2 grandsons, one 14 & the other 1 month. These 3 create a trio that I love beyond measure. My son is strong & smart, a bit of a jock & recently, he became a first-time dad. For a week I had the privilege of spending time with him, his wife, and month-old son. You see, they do not live next door or the next town over or even the next state over; they live across the US in the mountains of Colorado, his paradise on earth. One evening, I was presented a remarkable gift, one that I will treasure for as long as my memory serves me. The little one was fussy, so his dad scooped him up & danced about the living room floor, rocking him to & fro talking to him. Not to be so easily soothed, the wee babe fussed a bit louder. A few moments later, I heard from the bedroom the strains of a song my dad sang to his kids & then to his grandchildren…I Grew up

Next on the repertoire was “Mairzy dotes & does eat oats & little lambs eat ivy. A kid’ll eat ivy too, wouldn’t you?” My mom sang that song while rocking a baby, while baking cookies, while ironing. It’s one of the songs I associate with her & always smile when I hear it or think of it. Hearing my son sing these treasured tunes was like my mom & dad were right there with us, smiling & nodding their heads to the soft beat.

You can hear True Blue Bill in original form HERE  Listen to The Pied Pipers (1944) sing Mairzy Dotes HERE

We had a wonderful time in Colorado, a road trip that has been added to the annals of fun, fascinating vacations.

The Flower Gathering Junk Journal kits, 1 & 2, have been removed from the blog after a few months offered for free. You can find the kits on Studio on the Corner Etsy shop.

Not far behind apple picking, cooler days, & falling leaves comes Halloween, a favorite time of of year. It’s been fun working on crazy things to decorate the home & create a haunting of a good time party. You’ve all ready heard about Hecate’s Apothecary tags, but soon you’ll find The Witching Hour Halloween Banner, fun Bone Bags for stowing treats, & more. 0830171610_HDR Before I list digital creations I put them together to see if something needs tweaking & figure out how to write the PDF (directions) that accompanies each listing. The Witching Hour Halloween banner is not quite ready for prime time…yet.

0901171740_HDR

By printing & putting together the bone bags I discovered that a plain white inside is boring. Why not jazz it up? First I glued a paper to the inside, but then thought why not create a paper for the bags. All you have to do is print the pattern on standard print paper, flip it over & print the bone bag on the other side. Now to make the pattern paper…

There will be more Halloween goodies in the next week…more tags, favor bags for kids, & who knows what else.

That’s it for today! May your September be glorious & filled with the breathings of autumn.
